Chapter 16

RIVER

“So,” I say casually, “do you take all your dates up in your jet fighter to impress them?”

Drakken chuckles over the headset mic, “I thought you have other question. What do you mean dates?” he asks, amused. “Dates is fruit from tree, yes? Do I press them in plane? To make wine? From dates?”

“No—” I giggle, still completely unaware that I’ve pulled Drakken’s trigger.

“Is make no sense, Rivka,” he chuckles. “I very I confused.”

“No, silly!” I laugh innocently. “I mean like your girlfriends. Do you take them up in your plane to show off, to impress them with how cool you are?” It vaguely occurs to me that this is the sort of thing a teenager worries about, but I’m so busy trying to translate things for Drakken, I don’t really think about the underlying content of what I’m saying.

After a tense and confused silence, Drakken grunts, “I have no girlfriend, Rivka. I tell you before. I have no girlfriend for…” He chokes up, unable to continue.

Whoops.

Now I’m thinking about the content what I’m saying.

I suddenly remember that day in the Sunset Suite when everything went wrong. Before Drakken’s blow up, I insinuated that Svetlana was his girlfriend, I acted like an insecure teenaged drama queen. Rather than asking him for clarification, I went on the attack with the accusations. I’m surprised he didn’t blow up at me right then.

I’m sort of surprised he’s not blowing up at me now.

Once again, I’m assuming the worst about Drakken. I’m assuming he brings bimbo after bimbo up here to show off what a studly pilot he is. I mean, if I hadn’t been assuming the worst, why would I have asked him the question in the first place? I can be totally immature when the opportunity presents itself.

I back pedal anxiously, “Sorry, I meant dates, not girlfriends. A date is what you call it when you take a girl out to dinner or a movie before she becomes your girlfriend. You know, because you like her and maybe want her to be your girlfriend, but she isn’t yet officially your girlfriend. You’re just getting to know her. Know what I mean?” All my overly dramatic back pedaling is making it worse. Considering the embarrassment brake is still on, this shame train is going nowhere fast.

Time to shut my mouth.

After lengthy silence, Drakken mutters angrily, “I have no girlfriend for very long time, Rivka.”

“What?” I blurt.

BLAM!

The trigger has been pulled, and I was the one who pulled it. But somehow I still haven’t figured out what I’ve done.

“No girlfriend,” he growls. “No girlfriend since—” He stops himself short.

No girlfriends?

Why can’t I help but imagine that a guy like Drakken has already been through more girlfriends in his life than George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Ian Somerhalder, and every boy in every boy band ever, combined? I mean, Drakken is that hot. And he’s a billionaire fighter pilot. Him being a player is the obvious conclusion.

What can I say?

I suddenly stop myself.

I can say that I jump to way too many conclusions and I’m way too slow on the uptake today.
